Participant Arjan Verkerk is really attached to this donkey saddle.
“I was born in Aruba, went to the Netherlands at a very young age and then came to Curaçao with my family for my father’s work. It was easy for me to integrate because I’ve always loved this place. We lived in the Schelpwijk neighborhood. When we were teenagers me and my twin brother used to hang out with our friends. We would catch donkeys at Nortkant (north coast of the island).”
“It wasn’t easy as these animals are stubborn and strong as can be! Now in order to ride the donkeys we needed saddles. We found some of them and a lot of other old objects in and around Landhuis Noordkant, an abandoned 19th-century plantation house. I used this donkey saddle myself. It is more than 100 years old.”
