Hesus di Nasareno

Our participant Noris tells us about this antique object.

“This Jesus of Nazareth is over 150 years old. I am not sure how he ended up in our family but I know I saw him a lot as a kid. My mother was a very religious lady who collected money for the neighborhood church. She would send the yaya (nanny) to the neighbors with this Jesus of Nazareth to ask them to deposit some money in the drawer and then hand it to their neighbor who would then do the same, etcetera.”

“Back then, in the late 1940s, this was a normal thing to do in Otrobanda as we all knew each other and were very close. After some time my mother would get the Jesus back and deliver the money to the Misa di Santa Famia church next to our house. The remarkable thing about him is that he is sitting. As far as I know you can only find sitting Jesuses in Venezuela, elsewhere they are lying down or are crucified.”
