“In 1877 a hurricane passed by and destroyed almost every house in Penstraat. In 1954 hurricane Hazel also caused a lot of damage. Till this day the sea spits out remnants from that period. 20 years ago I found this auger bowl and mortar stones, all three separately in the Penstraat area. I also found forks, tiles and other household items. People living in the Penstraat area back then were Protestants from the upper middle class, just not wealthy enough to afford a house in Scharloo.”
